If you have found a pet wandering the streets by itself do the following:
- Call the nearest shelter, because we might already have information about the owner. If possible, provide a temporary home for the animal.
- Call the nearest shelter and ask them to come and get the pet. If you do not know which shelter accommodates lost pets in your town, contact your local municipality because they are responsible for making sure pets are returned to their homes. If you are calling outside office hours please leave us a message with both your and the pet's details!
- If you have found a pet ouside the shelter's working hours and you cannot provide a temporary home for it, contact your municipality or the police along with leaving a message to the shelter. We know that this system is quite complicated, however we do not have the funds to employ overnight staff. Outside office hours we do emergency pick-ups only if a person's or an animal's health is in danger.
- Bring the pet to the nearest shelter yourself (Please call first and let us know you are coming!)
If you have the possibility of providing a temporary home for the pet please do the following:
- Take pictures of the animal and send them to the shelter with your contact details and information about where you found the pet.
- Visit the veterinary or the shelter so it can be checked whether the animal has a microchip or whether its owner can be identified by other means. If you are calling outside office hours please leave us a message with your and the pet's details!
- Put up ads on different websites. You can find some great websites here (in Estonian).
- Put up an ad in the local newspaper.
- Use radio announcements! Our experience shows that the best outcome in Estonia is achieved by putting up a private ad in Radio Elmar.
- Try putting up pictures of the pet in the area where you found it. For safety reasons, do not add your home address!
- If you find the owner of the pet, let your local shelter know immediately and write down the contact details of the owner so that it would be easy to contact him if you happen to come across the same pet again in the future.
- Encourage the owner to microchip the pet and use a collar with his contact details on it.
